Club Sailing programme
This section forms the Notice of Race for the Club events and should be read in conjunction with the Club Programme.
RACING CHARTER
Competitors should note that UTSC implement the RYA Racing Charter and that they will be required to undertake to sail in compliance with the Charter, which can be found at the front of the Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012.
GENERAL
Races will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing. Sailing instructions are published separately and are available from the Race Box.
Competitors shall sign on using the sheet provided prior to any race.
Unless stated below (some Cup races are specifically long distance races) the time limit is 2 hours for the leading boat. Any boats finishing more than 30 minutes after first boat will be retrospectively shortened and a place allocated.
STARTING SEQUENCE
The Club starting sequence uses the system defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) Rule 26 except where modified by our sailing instructions. Special arrangements will be made for pursuit races.
Starting times for Series Racing and Cup / Trophy events are the earliest times that will be used. These may be postponed by the Race Officer for whatever reason, but usually related to wind or safety conditions.
SERIES RACING
To warrant a separate class start, there must be at least three boats about to sail before the starting sequence commences. At the Race Officer's discretion, boats of a class with fewer than three starters will be started with the Handicap start. The results will then be extracted for its class result.
Scoring System for all Series
The low point scoring system of RRS Appendix A shall apply to Series 1 to 5 inclusive, the Conqueror’s Pint and Summer Dey’s Jar. Boats not finishing that came to the starting area will be scored points for the finishing place one more than the number of all boats that came to the starting area; boats that did not come to the starting area will be scored points for the finishing place one more than the number of boats entered in the series in accordance with para. A9 of the RRS Appendix A.
Unless stated otherwise below, at least half of the number of published races in a series must have been completed (i.e. offered for sailing and completed) for a series to be valid, and the number of qualifying scores for a competitor’s series result will be half the number of published races, rounded up to the nearest whole number.
The sailing secretary retains the right to award a trophy in a race or series when no competitor completes the required minimum number of races.
Members who miss a series race because of box duty will receive points for that race corresponding to their average points, at the end of the series. They must write their names on each of the race sheets.
The number of prizes offered for a series will be the square root of the average number of starters in the series.
In the event that a boat changes its sails and races under a new number the original number and the new sail number must both be clearly identified on the race signing on sheet. The race result will be applied to the original boat and not the sail number.
