History In The Making

Published 09:29 on 21 Jul 2021
I once saw on a company executives office wall, a poster that had a beautiful sunset behind a mountain range, it said Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off the goal. Ollie Meadowcroft may not have read or heard these pearls of wisdom, but he didnt get picked for the UK team sailing 420s at the world championships by allowing COVID 19 problems to get in the way. He and his crew, Oscar Cawthorne from Solihull have sailed together since the end of 2019. They met when sailing Optimists at national level, Ollie now 17 and Oscar 16 years old. When Ollie outgrew Optimists, he moved on to 420s crewing for Ella Lance at the worlds in the under 17s in 2019. Ollie was offered places in three events, the Euros the Worlds and the RYA Youth National Championships, and as it is just not possible for him to do all of them, he chose the Worlds and the RYA event. The Worlds are taking place from 2nd to 10th July in Santo Stefano Al Mare, Italy, 40 miles along the coast from Nice. Tough gig, but hey, someone has to do it. The words duck and water seem to come together when Ollie had his first outing at UTSC in 2007, the die was cast. Every year since 2015 the cup for the Feva class at Junior Bourne End Week has his name on it. Sailing in the Topper class at the British Youth Sailing, South East Junior Championships in 2019, he took first place. Last autumn he was selected to be part of the British Youth Sailing Performance Squad, this gave him elite athlete status allowing him to sail through some of the lockdowns. Will we be saying in years to come, I knew Ollie Meadowcroft when he was just at lad at UTSC? Im sure I can confidently say that the whole club will be rooting for you Ollie, give it your best shot.
