Cadet Coaching

Cadet is for young sailors who want to have fun on the water, build their confidence, learn to sail faster and have a go at racing.

We run regular Cadet sessions throughout the sailing season, usually once a month - check the website calendar for times and dates.

Sessions combine coaching, games, sailing challenges and racing, with activities adapted to the experience of the sailors and the conditions on the day.

Whether they simply want to improve their sailing or develop their racing skills, everyone can get involved.

Cadets sail Toppers and RS Fevas, giving them experience of both single and double-handed dinghies. Sessions might cover boat handling, sailing faster, starts and basic racing rules before putting those skills into practice with games and races. We also hold a number of Cadet trophy races during the season.

Who can take part?

Cadets is open to club members. Sailors should have completed at least RYA Youth Sailing Stages 1 and 2, or have equivalent experience, so they can confidently sail a simple course. From there, Cadet sessions help them consolidate their skills and progress at their own pace.

Volunteer run parents and carers get involved too

Like the rest of the club, Cadets is volunteer run, and we need parents and carers to help make the sessions happen.

You don't need to be an experienced sailor. There are plenty of jobs on and off the water, including getting boats and equipment ready, rigging, launching and recovering boats, helping on the shore, running races, filming coaching and races, assisting with a safety boat and packing everything away afterwards.

Having plenty of help means we can spend more time sailing and give the Cadets the best possible sessions so parents and carers are encouraged to stay, get involved and enjoy being part of it.
