Relay Race SIs

The Relay Sailing Race is a thrilling and competitive event that combines the strategic elements of sailing with the excitement of a relay race. This unique race format involves teams of boats taking turns to navigate a set course, passing a baton at the start/finish line to the next boat in their team. The team with the lowest corrected time after completing the required number of laps is declared the winner.

The race typically begins with a 'Le Mans' start, a dynamic kick-off where team members sprint from the clubhouse to their first boat. This adds an initial burst of excitement and sets the tone for the rest of the event. The course itself is an in-shore route, easily visible from the club, making it a perfect spectacle for onlookers and to cheer for their favourite teams.

While the relay sailing race is intended to be a fun and engaging event, it still requires skilful sailing and strategic teamwork. Teams must coordinate their efforts, refine their tactics, and maintain optimal sailing conditions to achieve the best possible times. Effective communication and seamless baton handovers are essential for success.

It's time to think about forming teams for the relay race. Please remember this is intended to be a fun afternoons' sailing not a serious prize winning opportunity. We're looking for a minimum of five teams and preferably more. The overriding aim is to maximise the number of people having fun on the water. If you are planning to put a team together it helps if you can let David Frost know please.

In order to make it a little easier to put teams together the sailing instructions are slightly different.

a. There must be a cadet in the team but they are no longer required to be the helm of the Topper. Give us all a laugh and get a grandparent to sail the Topper instead! We've lots of good cadets in the club so you could form a separate team as well.
b. The requirement for each team to have a lady member has also been dropped. That's not to say ladies aren't welcome they are. For instance this rule change means there could be a ladies only team, which would have been difficult under the old rules. Now, there's a good challenge!
c. An individual is no longer limited to sailing in only one boat. This change is to make it easier to form a team, not to enable a couple of ace sailors to outperform everyone else. Please only take advantage of this rule change if it is the only way of putting a team together.
