First Aid Course at Upper Thames Sailing Club: Preparing for Emergencies

On Saturday, 4th January 2025, the Upper Thames Sailing Club hosted a comprehensive first aid course attended by 9 members and 1 non-member. The session was designed to equip participants with vital life-saving skills, ensuring they can confidently respond to emergencies both on and off the water.

Learning to Act in Emergencies

The course began with an essential focus on scene assessmenta critical first step in any emergency. Participants learned how to evaluate whether a situation was safe to approach and, if so, how to render aid effectively.

Key Skills Covered

The training covered a wide range of first aid skills, including:

Resuscitation (CPR): Hands-on practice in providing life-saving chest compressions and rescue breaths.

Using a Defibrillator: Learning to operate this crucial device to restart the heart during cardiac arrest.

Choking Assistance: Techniques to clear blocked airways quickly and safely.

Recovery Position: How to position an unconscious but breathing patient to keep their airway open.

Bandaging Wounds: Practical exercises in applying bandages to different types of injuries.

Administering Devices: Understanding how to use life-saving tools like epinephrine (EpiPens).

Hypothermia Treatment: Recognising the signs of hypothermia and administering appropriate care.

Confidence and Competence

Throughout the course, participants gained both knowledge and practical experience, ensuring they feel prepared to step in during an emergency. By the end of the day, all attendees successfully passed the course, earning their first aid certification.

A Safer Club Community

The newly trained first aiders add an invaluable layer of safety to the Upper Thames Sailing Club. In the event of an emergency, these individuals are now equipped to provide prompt and effective care, helping to ensure the well-being of fellow members.
